Google Flow is the AI video tool of Google. It is available in Malaysia. But many people in Malaysia open flow.google.com and see only one line: “Flow is not available in your country yet.”
We saw this error this week. We set up an AI computer lab for a training college in Kuala Lumpur, with 22 new Google Workspace accounts. Flow did not open on any of them. The computers were in Kuala Lumpur, on a Malaysian internet connection. This post explains the cause and the fix that worked for all our accounts.
Why Flow says “not available in your country”
Google links each Google Account to a region. Google uses this region to decide which services and terms apply to you. Flow and some other new Google apps check this region before they open.
Our new accounts had the region Unknown Region. Google had not linked them to a country yet. So Flow did not let them in, although the users were in Malaysia.
Some things do not change the region:
- A Malaysian internet connection.
- The “country version” on the Google Terms of Service page.
Check the region of your account
You can check the region in one minute. Do these steps on a computer:
- Sign in with the account that gets the error.
- Open Google’s region page.
- Make sure that the page shows the correct email after “You’re currently signed in as”.
- Read the region under “your account is associated with”.
If the region is Malaysia, the region is not the cause. If it is Unknown Region or another country, do the fix below.
The fix: ask Google to change the region
The form is on the same page. Send it only once for each account.
- Under Which region should your account be associated with instead?, select Malaysia.
- Under Why should this region be associated with your account?, tick I live here.
- Click Submit.
Google shows “Your request has been submitted”. Do not send the form again.
How long it takes
Google does not change the region immediately. A few hours later, the page still showed Unknown Region. But below it, the page said “The region associated with your account will change soon”, with Malaysia and an effective date.
This is the timeline that we saw on our 22 accounts:
- Day 1, afternoon: we sent the form for each account.
- Day 1, within 4 hours: all 22 accounts showed “will change soon” with an effective date.
- Day 2, morning: 19 accounts showed Malaysia, and Flow opened on all 19.
- Day 2, morning: the other 3 accounts still showed “will change soon”. They needed a few more hours.
Google sent no email about the change. Open the region page again to see the status.
The phone app can work when the website does not
On one account, the Flow app for Android opened while the website still showed the error. The account region was still Unknown Region at that time. So a working phone app does not mean that the account is correct. Fix the region, and the website opens too.
Tips for admins with many users
The form changes only the account that is signed in. We did not find a setting in the Google Admin console that changes the region for all users. So plan it like this:
- Tell each user to check the region page when they sign in for the first time.
- Ask each user with Unknown Region to send the form once.
- Tell users to wait one or two days before they try Flow again.
- Add these steps to your checklist for new staff or new students.
Do not tell users to use a VPN. A VPN does not change the region of the account.
Other Google apps can show the same error
Google often releases new AI apps in some countries first. When an app says that it is not available in your country, do not start with the app settings. Check the region of your account first. The same form fixes the region for all Google apps.
Next steps
We put the steps, with screenshots in English and Malay, in our Help Centre: Fix “not available in your country” in Google Flow.
